The Mental Load

How to create the cognitive space for the things that matter.

The mental load could be quietly killing your workplace productivity.

For mothers in particular, an overloaded brain can lead to stress, mental instability, and career regression. Why are so many women burning out? Because your capacity for thinking is finite and yet we treat it like an infinite resource. This session will explain what the mental load really is, why it so often falls unevenly, and why two people can look at exactly the same situation and see completely different jobs. Drawing on research from sociologists Leah Ruppanner and Allison Daminger, and on some very honest stories from her own family life, Joeli will show you where the mental load hides and what it costs us.

Then it gets practical. You'll audit your own mental load and work out what you can hand over, what you can do less of and what you can drop altogether. We also explore what line managers and employers can do to help employees reduce their mental load.

And finally, there’s the really interesting question: what could you do with all that brain space if you weren’t using it to remember who needs PE kit on Thursday?
